10 Eco-Friendly Holiday Wreaths (Some You Can Eat)

There are plenty of eco-friendly ways to make your home festive during the holiday season — potted plants instead of Christmas trees, beeswax candles instead of paraffin, organic linens instead of pesticide-laced ones, and energy-efficient LED lights, to name a few. One of our favorite ways to bring holiday cheer into homes is with wreaths: They don’t require moving furniture, they’re easy to store when you’re not using them, and they’re a natural way to infuse your house with the season’s best smells. But we still hate the idea of chopping down lumber just to decorate our homes, so we hunted for wreaths that don’t involve large tree chunks. The ones we found are a lot more than just something that’s pretty to look at: Some are fragrant, some are edible, and many are both. A few are organic, too. … More »

“Nudge Theory” Helps Men Pee on Target and Ride Bikes to Work

Peeing on target and recycling your cans and glass are simple tasks, but they’re surprisingly difficult for most of us (most women don’t seem to have problems with the first, but the cleanliness of men’s urinals indicates they’re not having such an easy time), so some environmentalists are using the “nudge theory” to make it easier, and more fun. The theory goes that instead of hitting consumers over the head with policies and consequences (taxes, fees and fines, for example), they’ll be more likely to adopt eco-friendly behaviors if they’re given small incentives and rewards. … More »

9 So-Called Green Celebs With Too Many Kids: Are These Famous Moms and Dads Eco-Hypocrites?

When Stella McCartney gave birth to her fourth child last week, we wondered if her child-bearing record makes Stella an eco-hypocrite — does having four kids really match up with her environmental advocacy? Some readers disagreed with the logic, citing her ability to pay for her offspring and applauding her for raising more like-minded, earth-conscious children, but other readers agreed that, despite her eco-friendly words and vegan fashion designs, at the end of the day, four kids per family simply isn’t eco-friendly. … More »

Is Stella McCartney an Eco-Hypocrite?

Stella McCartney, the English fashion designer, is reportedly in the hospital giving birth to her fourth child today. We’re happy for the not-new Mom and wish her family the best, but then again, isn’t she supposed to be a huge environmentalist? And she’s having her fourth kid? What now? The designer is an outspoken vegan and advocate of animal rights, but she’s also very into promoting an earth-friendly agenda. On World Environment Day, her West Hollywood store was turned into an eco-party, where she told the audience via tape-recording: “L.A., you drive too much. Take a walk. Ride the bus.”

Her advice is sound, but her child-bearing habit seems a little inconsistent with her eco-minded attitude. … More »

The Grateful Guest: 10 Eco-Friendly Hostess Gifts for Thanksgiving

If you’re not the one hosting Thanksgiving this year: Thank God. Be grateful that you get to enjoy a leisurely day compared to your host, and show your thanks by bringing a gift they’ll remember. But when you’re shopping for the perfect present, try to find something eco-friendly that your host will truly enjoy; ill-suited gifts and trinkets aren’t nearly as fun to give or receive, and they’ll most likely just end up in the trash. … More »
