I recently posted about CURLS a hair care company specializing in products specifically designed for curls (not a surprise right). In any case, I’ve got a review of their products coming up later today, but first a look at their eco-ethics.

CURLS ECO PERKS:

• A lot of the line is organic and natural.
• Packaging notes that they do not test on animals. BUT something to note is that their products do not carry the Leaping Bunny logo, and this is the only international symbol that represents actual tough non-animal testing standard.
• Packaging is 100% recyclable.
• They have a dedicated ingredients page at their website that defines the various ingredients in their products.

CURLS ECO CONS:

• They don’t have a dedicated sustainability page at their website. It was extremely hard for me to track down eco-info about the company. I have no clue if they have recycling policies in place, bottle return policy, or local buying procedures or what. In my opinion, any company who is selling organic products or eco-products should have a sustainability page in place.
• While many of their products are organic, or contain organic ingredients, the line of CURLS products is not exclusively organic. All of their baby hair care products are made organic, which is a perk, but their kids products and some adult products are not.
• Products are not listed on Skin Deep yet, but it’s noted that they have recently signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics and are working toward compliance.

ABOUT CURLS INGREDIENTS:

CURLS notes that their products are made with certified organic ingredients – I’m assuming they mean the products marked as organic, and a blend of exotic oils from Bali. The three products I tested for my upcoming review all listed their ingredients on the packaging and they’re all clearly listed on the website as well (bonus). I don’t like that it doesn’t say what percent of the products are organic, but the ingredients are mostly natural and non-toxic. I looked up the ingredients on Skin Deep and only found a few that are scored as above zero and most that were above zero were only a score of 2 (that’s a good thing) – zero is the least toxic at Skin Deep and a 2 means low hazard.

Exceptions included PHENOXYETHANOL, CETRIMONIUM CHLORIDE, COCAMIDOPROPYL BETAINE, and LAURAMIDE DEA which all rated 3 or 4.

As noted, products are not rated at Skin Deep yet, but after looking at all the ingredients, if I had to guess, I’d bet that the CURLS products I tested would earn a 2-3 at Skin Deep which means a low to moderate hazard toxicity wise. Not perfect but a lot better than many curl care products out there. For example, Bumble & Bumble Curl Conscious Shampoo, Wild Child, Pantene Pro-V Frizz Control Treatment, Curl Reviving, and Aussie Leave-In Conditioner, Hair Insurance, (to name a few) all score a 9 or 10 which is a high toxicity hazard.

MY FINAL SAY:

I’d say that this company is moderately eco-friendly and mostly non-toxic. There are greener overall companies and you can find less toxic products than CURLS but overall, the line is not that bad and they’ve got some eco perks. If they work for your curls the CURLS line is much safer and a whole lot less toxic than many other products out there.
